Radiation oncology workforce examine shows potential risk to provincial cancer growth care access

The latest study from America’s Radiation Oncology shows that gender and race gaps got narrowed. The survey from Radiation oncology physicians shows that more than 1100 physicians are in the all over the country and only a few physicians are practicing in the rural areas.

Research from the American Society for Radiation Oncology shows the graphic summarizing results.
Few of the examples that the study includes:

Migration of physicians from rural to the urban area:
According to the survey 9 Radiation Oncologist out of 10 works in the urban area and the surveys also show that the proportion of the oncologist in the rural area got decreased. The amount of rural radiation oncologist got decreased from 16% into 13% and it leads to making problem in accessing the Radiation therapy services.

In order to overcome this ASTRO is focusing more on providing the radiation oncology services to the rural areas.

Almost 60 million American people live in rural areas and everyone wants to get the medical care services near to their home. Because of this problem always there will be a difference between being treated and not being treated.

Gender equity movement:
Considering the previous survey, the female radiation oncologist percentage got increased from 26% into 29%. Nowadays women are very common in all kind of workforces. The modest but noticeable increases in the number of women and racial/ethnic minorities, for example, indicate that our field is moving toward more equity.

Moving to Academic centers from private practice:
Generally, most of the Radiation Oncologists are working for treating patients primarily in private practices, Academic centers, and hospitals. Survey of 2017 shows that few of the radiation oncologists are working in private practices with practicing at the academic universities and some are working in non-academic hospitals.

Increasing the availability of new technology:
95% of practices are often providing treatments to patients without increasing the risk of side effects. For most of the tumors, hypofractionation(i.e. Radiation therapy is given over a shorter period of time (fewer days or weeks) than standard radiation therapy) is the main treatment such as breast tumor, brain tumor. Nowadays some clinics are also getting adapted to the advanced technologies for providing better treatment with the low risk of side effects.

ASTRO is currently conducting various workforce studies to find recent trends and also increasing the employment and new technology used to access patient needs. The survey was conducted in 2017 and it reflects the response from almost 1174 oncologist representing 726 practices.

Poster Presentation - Influence of NECC (Nutrition and Exercise Center for Cancer Patients) on survival and body composition in Gastrointestinal Cancer Patients

Abstract BACKGROUND : Gastrointestinal cancer patients are particularly predisposed to develop cancer cachexia. Cachectic patients are characterized by loss of adipose tissue as well as skeletal muscle wasting which has a tremendous impact on quality of life and survival (1, 4). In terms of improvement for this multifactorial syndrome, Klinikum rechts der Isar (MRI) in Munich, Germany has founded NECC, a treatment concept including nutrition intervention and an individual training program. METHODS : In this study we focused on patients with pancreatic (n =15) and upper gastrointestinal cancer (n = 21). Body composition using CT images was analyzed initially, 4 weeks, 3 months and 6 months after initial visit of NECC (Image 1). To underline the outcome, NECC patients were matched to adequate partners who correspond in age, gender, diagnosis with TNM classification and type of surgery. The control group does not receive any further support concerning nutrition and physical exercise

Poster Presentation - The Notch ligand DLL1 exerts pro-carcinogenic effects in human breast cancer luminal A MCF-7 cells

Abstract  Background: Breast cancer (BC) is the most common cancer in women and has a high rate of relapse and death. The Notch signaling pathway plays an important role in normal breast development and homeostasis. Dysregulation of Notch receptors and its ligands Jagged1, Jagged2, and DLL4 has been detected in BC and implicated in tumor development, progression, drug resistance, and recurrence. The Notch ligand DLL1 has emerged as a player in BC as its expression is undetectable in normal breast tissues, but moderate to high in BC. In this study, we examined the role of DLL1 in BC luminal A MCF-7 cells. Methodology: DLL1 siRNA and recombinant DLL1 protein were used to evaluate the effects of DLL1 in MCF-7 cells. Gene expression was analyzed by qRT-PCR and immunoblotting. Cell growth and proliferation were assessed by trypan blue exclusion and MTT methods. Microscopy and scratch wound-healing assays were used to evaluate colony formation and cell migration. Findings: In M
